Recipe for Post # 28 Jennifer’s Grandmother’s Chocolate Vinegar Cake

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 Tbls white vinegar
  • 6 Tbls vegetable oil
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips, any variety

Preheat oven to 375.  Prepare 8x8x2 glass baking dish.  In a large bowl, mix flour, cocoa, baking soda, sugar, and salt until well blended.  In a small bowl, whisk together water, vanilla, oil, and vinegar until combined.  Make a well in dry ingredients and pour wet into the well.  Thoroughly combine until no lumps are present.  Fold in chocolate chips.  Pour into prepared dish and bake for 35-40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.  Under cooking by a couple of minutes makes the cake fudgier.   Cool, and top the cake with favorite topping.  These could be chocolate frosting, a dusting of powdered sugar, whipped cream, berry puree, whatever you have on hand.

  1. Yay!! I’m so happy you found it! 🙂 thank you, now I’m going to have to make it. When you said there was going to be a surprise for me on here, I went through and read all the past posts, I LOVE reading all the stories about you guys growing up. Oh and my husband said he could probably find the cords you need to access some of your old files, he’s a major computer geek himself 😉 love you Uncle Joe!

    • Yeah, probably not on the cord. It’s waaaay old stuff and power cords come and go quickly. I couldn’t believe it when I found the recipe. I found it this morning and I’ve already made the cake! Everyone here loves it! Did you like the way I renamed it?

      • I do like the way you named it 🙂 I will possibly be doing some baking this weekend! I can’t wait.
