Recipe for Post # 14 Sangria

  • 4 large oranges
  • 2 lemons
  • 2 normal bottle of red wine *or*
  • 1 large bottle of red wine
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup brandy
  • 1 litre sparkling beverage (seltzer, ginger ale, 7 Up)

Remove zest from one orange and one lemon and place in a large capacity jar.  Squeeze juice from the orange, plus two others, as well as from the lemon.  Pour both bottles of wine into jar with juices and add sugar.  Stir to dissolve sugar and mix flavors.  Add brandy.  Cover jar and chill several hours or overnight.  Before serving, slice remaining lemon and orange into thin slices and add to sangria.  Add sparkling beverage of choice and stir gently so as not to release too many bubbles.  Pour into punch bowl or pitcher and set out with glasses and ice.

The wine you use is up to you, whatever you like.   A less sweet wine works well, while a sweeter wine adds a sweeter flavor.  Whatever your favorite red wine is is fine.  The brandy should be the best quality you can get.
